Course Summary

This course ensures students have the knowledge and skills needed to progress into skilled employment in early years or higherlevel technical training.

Course Details

This course provides specialist training covering occupational and industry-specific skills.

Topics will include:

  • Understanding the education and childcare sector from ages 0 to 19
  • Child development
  • How to support children and young people’s education
  • Safeguarding health and safety & wellbeing
  • Understanding and managing behaviour
  • Observing and assessing children and young people
  • Equality and diversity
  • Special educational needs and disability
  • English as an additional language
  • Working with parents, carers and wider families
  • Working with agencies and services that support children, families and carers
  • Reflective practice and other forms of professional development

You will also complete 750 hours of work placement in a variety of settings to demonstrate your skills and competency with children.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

In year one you will be assessed in a variety of ways, including two externally-set exams and an employer-set project. In year two there are knowledge-based assignments, work placement tasks and direct observations of your practice to demonstrate competency for the industry.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including Maths and English at grade 4.

Equipment required

There will be a cost to travel to work placement, plus a DBS check and uniform (needed for work placement).

Your next steps...

You will learn the skills and qualities needed to work with children and build a portfolio of evidence to support your transition to higher education or employment. The course gives you a license to practice, so you could work in a variety of roles including an early years practitioner, nanny, teaching assistant or an individual needs assistant. You can also go on to higher education to study a variety of subjects, including primary education to become a primary school teacher.
